Jars upon jars of boiled, chewy, chocolates, toffees and liquorice were these to tempt a child to spend their pocket money.
This trend in the confectionery world for traditional sweet shop treats shows no sign of ending, with consumer demand ever increasing for people wanting to have that retro sweet experience to remember the days they would browse the pick ‘n’ mix counter to see if their favourite penny chews were there.
This demand for the ability to go and order for ‘a quarter of’ a sweet candy selection has now moved from the traditional sweet shoppe as you could imagine the Victorian era, to online retailers, who’s websites offer the wide range of confectionery treats, but now with the added bonus to be able to send them directly to your door the next day. Even, in terms of presentation, the retro sweets can be presented in a traditional bag, as well as other forms of packaging that have become more accessible to small businesses with reduced manufacturing costs and innovative design, usually from overseas suppliers. Items such as embossed tins, sweet jars and elaborate cardboard boxes are now more affordable to retailers, who in turn don’t have to charge as much for these packaging options when passing it onto the consumer.
Seasonal events also play a big part here, with events like Valentines Day, Halloween and Christmas providing an extra wide selection of products for customers to choose from. “They say this stuff isn’t good for you, but everyone gets a craving.” Across the street at the Oxxo, the ubiquitous 7-Eleven -style convenience store chain, construction workers in orange hardhats were emerging at lunchtime with 2-liter bottles of Fanta Orange and bags of Bimbo cupcakes. The taxes are “a cruel way to take away the little pleasure we can give our kids,” said Juan Torres, 55, who makes a living watching parked cars for a few pesos. “How do you tell your children you are so poor you cannot give them a little soft drink?” The legislation taxes high-calorie foods, defined as those providing 275 calories or more per 100 grams, at 5% of the ticketed price and chewing gum at 16%. Soft drinks would go up in price about 8 cents per liter. A generation ago, the country’s greater problem was malnutrition, and while such deficiencies certainly continue to exist, a larger middle class had adopted some of the more lamentable consumption habits of the country to the north, puffing out waistlines and padding hips. The upside of making junk food and high-sugar drinks more expensive and reducing their consumption is the obvious health benefit. According to the United Nations ‘ Food and Agriculture Organization, 32.8% of Mexican adults are obese, and obesity-related diabetes is now the leading cause of death. Though some countries such as Samoa and Nauru have a greater percentage of obese adults, Mexico’s is the highest among large countries. In the United States, 31.8% of adults are obese, the FAO says. “The eyes of the world are focused on Mexico,” the World Health Organization said, calling for passage of the taxes in one of the many full-page newspaper ads published this week to focus attention on the issue. Warning that Mexico was dealing with an “epidemic of obesity and overweight,” the WHO urged that the taxes be even higher. But there is a downside. The items likely to be subject to new taxes are those that the poorest consume, and they will pay disproportionately. The business community also says that mom-and-pop stores, like that of Blas Luna, will be hurt the most.
19, 2013 Getty Images You probably saw the news last week about what’s really in chicken nuggets. Researchers at University of Mississippi Medical Center performed what they called an “autopsy” of nuggets from two different national fast food chains and found that chicken meat was not the predominate componentin fact, fat made up an equal or greater portion of the nuggets, in addition to bone, nerve, and connective tissue. Lovely, huh? If you’re grossed out enough to say sayonara to fast food all together (virtual high five!), I have several still quick, but much healthier alternatives. Healthy Fast Food Alternatives Supermarket smorgasbord Grocery stores are generally in the same vicinity as fast food joints. So rather than pulling into a drive-through, pop into the supermarket and stroll through the express line. Most chains now have prepared food sections, with ready-to-eat options like chilled vegetable salads and grilled salmon. Other healthy items that don’t require prep include baby carrots and hummus, mini bananas, and nuts. Healthy Fast Food Alternatives Fast casual The concept of fast casual is ‘fresh food fast,’ and establishments that fit the bill, including Chipotle, Panera Bread, and Pei Wei are popping up all over. Many of these restaurants serve up freshly prepared dishes, made-in-house, with ingredient lists that read like a recipe from a healthy cookbook. For example, the chicken at Chipotle is made from hormone and antibiotic free chicken, water, chipotle chili, rice bran oil, cumin, garlic, oregano, black pepper, and salt. (Note: according to the web site, some cities use soybean oil.) To be sure of what you’re getting, hop online, check out the nutrition facts, and always read ingredient lists. One of my favorite go-tos is a Chipotle salad, made with Romaine lettuce, fajita veggies, black beans, mild salsa, and guacamole. Super satisfying, and about as quick and clean as it gets. Healthy Fast Food Alternatives Pack a meal If you tend to be stuck with lesser-of-various-evil options, invest in an insulated lunch sack, and toss in a meal you can whip up in a jiffy.
And desserts often seem to render bacon fat into a congealed mess. The bacon experiment led us down a whole branch of questions: Could we total how much chicken there is on the entire site? What about how many testicles? Could we figure out how many miles of spaghetti there are? Yes, yes, and yes! (The answers are in the charts above.) But one thing we really wanted to know was: What foods are most popular now, and how has food popularity waxed and waned over time? We looked at the rates of comments on eight faddish foods: Big Food Fads, Over Time Interest in these 8 foods has waxed and waned over time. We calculated these by first finding the total number of reviews for each food. Then, we figured out what percentage of those reviews came in each quarterly period since 2007. (That arithmetic allowed us to normalize the data-otherwise, this thing would be a huge bacon chart and everything would look tiny.) Perhaps the most surprising thing is how much the answers conform to anecdotal evidence from pop culture. Low-carb diets and Portobello burgers were totally a mid-2000s thing. And sure enough, their popularity was tanking by 2007. Similarly, if you live on the coasts, youve probably found more and more restaurants and haute grocery stores touting quinoa. The trend is very recent.
Please contact us to discuss your case,” the message said. A spokesman for the Home Office, which is responsible for immigration in the UK, said the texts had been sent to 39,100 people between September 2012 and June 2013. It is more than just incompetence. It is racist stereotyping. Bobby Chan, immigration case worker Similar messages were also sent out via email and by post to contact individuals who had no right to be in Britain, he said. But some were received by legal residents, including the anti-racism campaigner, Suresh Grover, who said he was “absolutely shocked and quite horrified”. “I came here with my parents in 1966, I was born in East Africa and have always had a British passport,” he said. Bobby Chan, an immigration adviser, said he had also received a text despite having lived in Britain since 1973. “It is more than just incompetence,” he told Al Jazeera. “It is the racist stereotyping of the Chinese community.” The Home Office spokesman said the private contractor responsible for the text campaign had acknowledged 14 texts were sent in error, “a tiny, miniscule number”. The opposition Labour party condemned the campaign as a “gimmick” that risked offending and alienating its own citizens. ‘Showing them the door’ It recalled a similar Home Office campaign in July in which posters were displayed in London asking: “In the UK illegally? Go home or face arrest.” The posters were criticised as “stupid and offensive” by the business secretary Vince Cable, a Liberal Democrat member of Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative-led coalition government. But days after that campaign was launched, British authorities rounded up scores of “immigrant offenders” in a nationwide operation condemned as racist. The Home Office was widely criticised for the spot-checks of hundreds of people at stations and on streets in areas including London, Durham, Manchester, Wales and Somerset that lead to the arrest of 139 people.
(WKYT) – The University of Kentucky will pay out more than $1 million to a former surgeon who was the head of the Kentucky Children’s Hospital heart surgery program. The settlement comes after UK Healthcare came under fire, accused of hiding information about deaths involving pediatric heart surgeries. Details of the settlement between Dr. Mark Plunkett and UK Healthcare were obtained by our partners at the Herald-Leader. It says UK will pay Plunkett a lump sum of just more than $1 million, the first $650,000 is to be given to Plunkett within ten days. The agreement also gives him salary supplements for two years to make up the difference between his former salary of $700,000 and whatever future job he takes. He resigned from UK in July to take a job at the University of Florida, after UK put the pediatric heart surgery program on hold, following parents concern over mortality rates. Since then, the University of Florida announced it decided to part ways with Dr. Plunkett. In his agreement with UK, Dr. Plunkett agrees to, “exercise diligence and good faith,” in finding a new job. It says if Dr. Plunkett is unemployed, UK will pay him $350,000 a year.
In July, a month after the PRISM scandal broke, the British Parliaments intelligence oversight committee announced that the countrys spy services had not illegally used the American program to access the content of private communications of UK citizens they knew this because the spy services, namely NSA counterpart GCHQ, told them so. Not the end of the story That said, the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) conceded that the laws it was talking about were a tad fuzzy and perhaps out-of-date, so the investigation quietly continued. Now, after months of further surveillance revelations that point to GCHQ itself as a major data-hoover , that inquiry is set to widen: on Thursday, the ISC said it would also look into the impact on peoples privacy, and would even hear evidence from the public. Even more astonishingly, some of its evidence-gathering sessions may be held in public, rather than in secret as is the norm. According to Malcolm Rifkind, the ISC chairman and a former UK defence secretary and foreign secretary (pictured above): In recent months concern has been expressed at the suggested extent of the capabilities available to the intelligence agencies and the impact upon peoples privacy as the agencies seek to find the needles in the haystacks that might be crucial to safeguarding national security. There is a balance to be found between our individual right to privacy and our collective right to security. The reaction from privacy activists has been cautious , and understandably so this is the same Malcolm Rifkind who last month downplayed the significance of Edward Snowdens revelations regarding the UKs own Tempora program, a partner program to PRISM, writing : On Tempora, it has been well known that the fibre optic cables that carry a significant proportion of the worlds communications pass close to the British coastline and could provide intelligence opportunities. The reality is that the British public are well aware that its intelligence agencies have neither the time nor the remotest interest in the emails or telephone conversations of well over 99% of the population who are neither potential terrorists nor serious criminals. Modern computer technologies do permit the separation of those that are of interest from the vast majority that are not. Shooting the messenger The announcement of limited public involvement in the ISC inquiry follows an extraordinary two weeks in which the Guardian, the British newspaper that has carried much of the Snowden material, has come under sustained attack from the new head of the UK Security Service (a.k.a. MI5), leading right-wing newspaper the Daily Mail and even fellow left-wing newspaper The Independent, whose former editor penned the immortal line: If MI5 warns that this is not in the public interest who am I to disbelieve them? The attacks from other journalists led editors from around the world to defend the Guardians journalism last week, but this week Prime Minister David Cameron piled on, urging MPs to investigate the publication because what theyre dealing with is dangerous for national security. Conservative MP Julian Smith also asked police to investigate the Guardian over terrorism offences . However, this official attitude is not unanimous. Late last week, business secretary Vince Cable said the Guardian was entirely correct and right even courageous to publish the Snowden material. Former Home Office minister Lord Blencathra also said the public had a right to know whether they were being spied upon, especially as proposed laws that would have allowed greater domestic surveillance had been repeatedly shot down. He said that, when his committee had been examining the last such proposal, the intelligence services had not told MPs that they already had mass surveillance capabilities. Of course, whatever the outcome of this inquiry, one thing it is not concerned with is the surveillance of the rest of the world by British intelligence services. 3.4% of all money spent in the UK on consumer goods goes towards online food shopping. Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys have all made big strides in home delivery of groceries, while Ocado, who are known for working alongside upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose, are still going strong in their sector. Two chains who are set to join the party are Morrisons and Marksy & Spencer. Morrisons are set to work with Ocado to offer home deliveries at the start of 2014, while Marks & Spencer will have their own online butcher and fishmonger services. Fashion was a strong performer too, boosted by the likes of ASOS who have made online retail their own. Non-store retailing is king The ONS found that growth in non-store online retailing grew by a massive 21.1% year-on-year. In total, it accounts for around two thirds of online spending. It encompasses such things as services, and could be essential in determining whether the upward curve of online retail in the UK is set to continue in the long and medium-term. In the meantime, last months figures make for great reading as far as the countrys GDP is concerned. Expectations for the Q3 GDP figures are expected to rise as a result of the good news from the online retail sector, but there are a few things which may undermine it, principally high inflation and minimal wage growth. Should inflation begin to fall and wage growth rise in the coming months, then there may be a chance that consumer confidence starts to rise, especially with the busy Christmas shopping period on the horizon. A higher than expected total rise for retail sales last month compared to August is encouraging nonetheless. Leaving summer behind Augusts retail sales figures were a little mixed.

While I could probably have guessed that record sales were down, the recentness and sharpness of the decline was interesting. As you can see below, since 2008 new record sales have dropped by almost 50%. I am sure that number is even greater if you go back to, say, 1999, when it was cool to have CD books and stacks of albums. Year $100,000 for placement in a cell-phone commercial 1 $100,000 One of the more interesting data points that stands out is the minuscule amount of money that these bands earn from the streaming services that have become so prevalent in the world today. If Pandora (see IB Research reports ) or Spotify are somewhat responsible for taking album dollars out of the pockets of artists, they should at least be making up a decent amount of that lost income. It makes the Internet Radio Fairness Act seem all the more absurd. The Market Realist Take With online streaming and Internet radio services becoming more popular than listening to CDs, the music industry and Internet radio companies like Pandora have been embroiled in a continuing battle over royalty payments. Pandora has stated that its profitability has been affected because Internet radio stations have to pay six times the royalty rate of other mediums. Pandora pushed for the passage of the Internet Radio Fairness Act, which would lower royalty rates, but the bill faced stiff opposition from labels, publishers, and music artists. Pandora Media recently won a case against the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) with a federal judge ruling that ASCAP has to provide Pandora access to its entire catalog of music through 2015, when the current licensing terms are up for renewal. Clear Channel and Warner Music Group struck a mutually beneficial partnership deal in September that will allow WMG to promote its artists through Clear Channel in return for low royalty rates on Clear Channels iHeartRadio. Although this deal was considered groundbreaking, theres no actual legislation yet that will ensure fair compensation for the artists. The entry of tech giants Apple Inc.
However, they are perfect for INSTRUMENT 1 and Artiphon, an instrument and company that is unique and unusual in the current hardware startup landscape. For one, the startup is based in Nashville, a mecca for aspiring musicians but unheard of, as far as, startups are concerned. Then, there is the odd combination of hardware with software. While most music-based startups focus on either one of the domains, Artiphon has taken a big picture approach by combining an iPhone-based software app with a sophisticated instrument that is the banjo (or, guitar) equivalent of a keyboard. When you look at the market today, most devices (such as boomboxes) are focused on music consumption, explains thirty-year-old Mike Butera, the man behind INSTRUMENT 1 and Artiphon. Butera, who holds a doctorate in sound studies and is a philosophy professor, says the mobile revolution, which has blurred boundaries between music creators or producers and music consumers, provided the trigger for INSTRUMENT 1. Mike Butera with INSTRUMENT 1, Artiphon’s first product A number of factors have contributed to the transition in roles. Back in the 1970s, the development of solid-state electronic components miniaturized piano keyboards and extended their capabilities to mimic other instrument sounds. The recent mobile revolution has benefitted from low costs of components such as powerful processors, memory and sensors. In turn, these have slashed prices for mobile musical toys and made their capabilities more powerful. For example, the more powerful a processor, the better sounds and tones it will produce. However, the music-making industry is, yet, to catch up with the mobile revolution. Most new instruments in the market are generally toy-like , foreign, and difficult to use, says Butera. INSTRUMENT 1 deliberately focuses on the creation niche for mobile music. Overcoming Limitations The transition from a simple idea to a workable prototype, however, took much longer.
Both are magnificent in the way they captured facial expressions and moods. There’s so much honesty in their work, which can take a lifetime to achieve. I’m still working on it. Painting is really a magic trick, an illusion. What a painter leaves out often is as important as what is added. When I paint, I strive for the proper balance between composition and space. I’ve been studying for years with two mastersEverett Kinstler, a portrait painter, and Charles Reid, a brilliant watercolorist. So I have two of the best possible teachers. I enjoy the tranquillity and complete privacy of my studio, and when I paint, time floats away. If I start at 2 p.m. and finish late in the afternoon when the light fades, I become so absorbed that it feels like only 15 minutes have passed. I usually listen to the Sinatra station on Sirius satellite radio or to WBGO, the local jazz station.
But unless you’re a serious music nerd, Rdio is the most usable option. For vast amount of music fans, Rdio has the best design and functionality, making it CNNMoney’s Best In Tech for the streaming music category. If you’ve never used a streaming music subscription service like Rdio or Spotify , understand that it’s not Pandora ( P ). You don’t pick a song or artist and then let the service build a randomly-generated playlist for you. Instead, for $10 a month, you have unfettered access to an online jukebox with tens of millions of songs. What really separates Rdio from the competition is its social backbone. You can follow friends, strangers, musicians, businesses, etc. and get a sense of what they’re listening to. Rdio will also recommend songs and artists for you to check out based on your friends’ interests. That may not seem like a big deal, but when you’re not quite sure what to listen to, this feature is one of the best in helping you figure it out. Another standout Rdio feature is the ability to build an online library full of “your” tracks. With rival services, having your favorite music in front of you means scrolling through hundreds of playlists in the sidebar of the app. It’s less than ideal. Rdio instead presents your collection as a highly visual array of album thumbnails that can be sorted in a variety of manners. But functionality aside, Rdio is just laid out and presented across all platforms (desktop, phone and Web) in manner that’s visually cleaner and easier to process than its competitors.
Accor, which has started a three-year reorganization plan that includes increasing its focus on emerging markets, is betting on Indias middle class, which is forecast to add the equivalent of more than the entire population of Germany in less than a decade. Middle Class Between 2010 and 2021, Indias emerging middle class — who earn as much as $5,550 a year — will swell by 100 million to 570 million, PricewaterhouseCoopers estimated in June 2012. Paris-based Accor , which has 23 percent of its hotels in Asia, considers India as one of its three strongest growing markets over the longer term after China and Indonesia , Issenberg said. More than half the hotels it will build will be in Asia, he said. Hotels are a consumer item, its a discretionary spend, Issenberg said. As the middle class continues to grow in Asia, travel will continue to grow and grow faster than GDP. Nakul Anand, chief executive of ITCs hospitality business, said in July that the operator is developing at least 18 projects. Indian Hotels opened two new hotels since April, adding 175 rooms, according to an Aug. 12 company presentation. It plans to add 1,575 rooms by March 2014 and an additional 1,553 in the next fiscal year, it said at the time. Keeping Up India has 200,000 rooms versus 5 million in the U.S., which has a smaller population, and 3 million in China, according to Indian Hotels Managing Director Raymond Bickson. Accor has over 455,985 rooms at more than 3,555 hotels in 92 countries, according to its website. Its brands include Sofitel, Pullman, MGallery, Grand Mercure, the Novotel, and Ibis. With 22 hotels in India, including properties in the cities of Mumbai and New Delhi, it plans to add 30 more over the next three years, and will focus on building hotels in the economy and mid-scale segment in India, Issenberg said.
The rally is based on expensive price cutting and manipulated sales data, which will only further undermine the precarious state of most of Europes non-German manufacturers. Car sales may have stopped falling at close to 20 year lows, and forecasts for next year are positive. But much of this improvement has been down to huge spending by the manufacturers on discounts and price cuts, while dealers are being persuaded to buy the excess cars on their lots which count as new car sales. These will eventually be sold on to the public at well below sticker price. The Brussels-based European Car Manufacturers Association, known by its acronym in French, ACEA, ( www.acea.be ) announced today that Western European car sales were up 5.4 per cent in September compared with the same month last year at just over 1.1 million, bringing the total for the year so far to 8.8 million. Thats a fall of 4.0 per cent on the first nine months of last year. Peter Fuss, partner at consultants Ernst & Young Ernst & Young s Global Automotive Center in Frankfurt, Germany, said the recovery in car sales was down to the improvement in Europes economic outlook, with the Euro currency zone pulling out of recession during the second half of 2013. But with factory use down to less than 65 per cent by manufacturers, according to Fuss, this underlines the chronic overcapacity in Europe, which remains unresolved because of pressure from unions and governments to resist rationalisation. The European industry is looking for a bailout along the lines of the U.S. intervention on behalf of bankrupt GM and Chrysler, to allow it to finally shut-down uneconomic factories. But given the financial crisis in the euro zone, this is simply unaffordable.
In contrast, brewer SABMiller Plc said sales of lager in the last three months jumped 10 percent by volume in China, one of the markets that helped the maker of Peroni and Grolsch beers post a 6 percent rise in net sales by value, up from a 2 percent rise the previous quarter. “We see this as a solid result in tough market conditions,” said Numis Securities analyst Wyn Ellis. Stifel Nicolaus analyst Mark Swartzberg also said SABMiller was “navigating better than Diageo”. Diageo, the world’s biggest spirits company as well as the maker of Guinness and Red Stripe beers, posted a 3.1 percent rise in sales for its first quarter, ended Sept. 30, which analysts said fell short of their expectations for a 4 percent rise. Sales rose 5 percent in the previous quarter. Meanwhile Remy, which generates 40 percent of its operating profit from cognac sales in China, said wholesalers were reducing inventories after sales fell short of expectations during the Chinese New Year. Remy said revenue declined 5.3 percent on a like-for-like basis to 294.4 million euros ($397.2 million) in the three months to Sept. 30, its second quarter, compared with a 2.3 percent decline in the previous quarter. Remy’s shares were down 3 percent at 71.48 euros by 1239 GMT, when shares in Diageo were up 0.3 percent at 1944 pence and shares in SABMiller were up nearly 4 percent at 1358 pence. Despite the slowdown in the last three months, Diageo stood by its medium-term outlook calling for annual sales growth of 6 percent. But several analysts questioned whether the maker of Johnnie Walker whisky and Smirnoff vodka would be able to meet it. “We would be sceptical of Diageo delivering that …

Ireland, which had already cut air tax to just 3 per passenger per flight, said earlier this week that it will scrap the tax on flights completely from April 2014. Commenting that Britain has the highest rate of air tax in the world, Steve Hoy, chief commercial officer at Bmi regional, urged the UK government to adopt a similar policy. This recent tax break highlights that the Irish constituency has recognised the negative impact that the duty has on core industry, tourism and airlines, Hoy said, adding: Were disappointed that UK air travel continues to be subjected to such a considerable levy and urge the UK government to follow suit. Following the latest rise in Air Passenger Duty (APD) in April 2013, the standard rate (for non-economy class) of APD for Band A (for destinations less than 2,000 miles from London) is 26. The rate for Band D (more than 6,000 miles) is 188, rising to 194 from April 1 2014. The APD has been cited as the reason for pricing ordinary families out of overseas holidays , discouraging airlines from opening new routes and forcing many to be withdrawn, and causing inbound tourists, who pay the tax on their flight home, to go elsewhere. A report by C & IT Magazine said that nearly 250 UK business leaders have also signed a petition telling the Chancellor of the Exchequer that Air Passenger Duty (APD) was a significant additional burden for businesses. The petition, organised by the campaign A Fair Tax on Flying, said that supporters were calling on the Government to undertake urgent action to reduce the worlds highest air passenger tax. Air travel is vital to the success of our business because it helps us to connect to new markets and reach new customers, it said. Commenting on the situation, an HM Treasury spokesperson said: The Government has frozen APD in real terms since 2010, and in the last year, APD has not changed at all for the majority of flights. Passenger numbers are going up, and airlines do not have to pass on the cost of APD to passengers. However it is important that the aviation sector plays a part in helping to bring down the deficit. International aviation is generally not subject to tax on fuel, and in contrast to many other countries, there is no VAT charged on flights in the UK. Meanwhile, announcing the decision to abolish the tax, Irish finance minister Michael Noonan reportedly said that he expected airlines to respond by launching new routes and increasing the frequency of other services.
To fulfil this function, it will have its own investigators, including individuals in the Economic Crime Command. However, the NCA will also work together with other enforcement agencies, such as the SFO. The SFO will retain its role as the lead agency for investigating large and complex cases of corporate bribery and enforcing the Act with respect to corruption overseas. The UK government has also put forward proposals for a new bribery reporting mechanism. This may involve rewarding whistleblowers, including the provision of financial incentives in addition to offering immunity from prosecution. The government is reviewing the mechanism in place in the United States, where qui tam provisions in the False Claims Act allow whistleblowers to receive a portion of the financial penalties levied on companies, but it remains to be seen whether a similar regime will be implemented in the United Kingdom. Implications Overall, the changes to the enforcement regime seem to point to an increased appetite for antibribery enforcement by the UK authorities. These changes are perhaps not surprising given that there have been three successful prosecutions by the Crown Prosecution Service under the Act in the more than two years since its introduction and that the SFO launched its first prosecution in August 2013. This case is scheduled to go to trial in 2014. A move towards cooperation between multiple agencies, each with its own pool of resources, may therefore lead to an increased number of bribery investigations. On the other hand, these changes carry the risk of parallel inquiries and disagreements between agencies, which may, in turn, delay and obstruct the anticorruption effort. The new reporting mechanism, if introduced, is likely to encourage bribery enforcement.
They have to this point performed 24 major concerts (fall and spring) along with about ten or more other performances each year for a total of about 170 concerts. Howard Green is the founder, conductor and musical director of the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band. When casting about for a theme for this years fall concert, Green noted that a great many significant musical anniversaries occurred in this year, 2013. In addition to the centennial and bicentennial birthdays of Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi (1813), Benjamin Britten, Woody Herman, Sammy Cahn, and Jimmy Van Heusen (1913), it was also the sesquicentennial birthday of Pietro Mascagni and the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernesto Lecuona. This year also marks the 100th birth date of Danny Kaye, and the same major anniversaries of great pieces of music like the musical Oliver! and The Banks of Green Willow. Considering all the musical connections, Green decided that 13 was not so unlucky after all. In fact it has been a very lucky thing and that led to the theme of the concert. The selections he has chosen will all be by composers born in 1813, 1913, or on the 50-year anniversaries 1863 and 1963), or which were written in those years. Green is excited about this upcoming concert. He says, As always we are going to provide a veritable fall feast for our audience. The variety and quality of what we program is what I believe brings people back to hear our concerts every season both our loyal and valued followers and our new members. And the challenge to our wonderful musicians (there are 70 of them from not only Buffalo Grove but all over the Chicago area!) is what makes these performances so much fun. Green describes the pieces in glowing terms. The program will include hair-raisers like the Verdi Overture to The Sicilian Vespers and the Overture to the Flying Dutchman, as well as popular show tunes from Oliver premiered 50 years ago in 1963, a march by Sousa written in 1913, and other wonderful selections.
October 17, 2013 (AP) By CHRIS TALBOTT AP Music Writer Muse frontman Matt Bellamy had to be more than just camera-ready for “Muse – Live at Rome Olympic Stadium.” The British rock band’s new concert film was shot in 4K, which meant a whole new level of detail. “There’s weird things like hair and stuff that you probably would never pay attention to,” Bellamy said. “It’s so much more noticeably sharper that it’s almost unsettling at first.” “Muse – Live at Rome Olympic Stadium,” directed by Matt Askem, is the first concert film released in the new ultra high definition format. Also called 4K, UHD has a much better resolution than regular HD and is considered the next technological leap in film and television. Thousands of movies have been shot in 4K, but almost all of them have been shrunk down to HD format before being screened. Exceptions include Sony’s 2011 remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Will Smith’s sci-fi adventure “After Earth.” Fans will get a first look at the Muse film Nov. 5 when it debuts in 20 cities around the globe, before expanding to 700 theaters worldwide the next day in 2K and 4K. Bellamy said in a phone interview Wednesday from Costa Rica that the band was inspired by U2′s use of then-new technology in the 2008 concert film “U23D,” so they decided to kick up the production values and aim for something a little more grand. A trailer shows video screens stories tall and pyrotechnics backing the band. Spider cameras crawled over rigging above the crowd during the July concert, and a pair of actors contributed abstract theatrical interpretations of some of the songs. Even so, Bellamy said when he saw the movie, his eyes often drifted away from the action on stage to the vivid details elsewhere. “You see the sort of big panning (shot) across the audience and your eyes are drawn to the details of so many people’s heads and what they’re wearing,” Bellamy said. The release of the film and the conclusion next month of a long world tour leaves Muse, which also includes bassist Chris Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard, at something of a crossroads with no concrete plans at the end of a six-album record deal. “Early next year I think we’ll probably take a break for a few months and at some point next year we’ll start writing new music,” Bellamy said. “I think if everyone is up for it, we’ll start recording music sometime next year.”
